Kathryn Shearer is an Australian Photographer, currently based in the Mojave Desert, California.
Kathryn’s work explores the complexities of the human experience in the modern world, examining themes of naturalism, the female emotional and physical experience and personal autonomy.
Kathryn’s process involves her venturing into landscapes with her camera and tripod, exploring and absorbing her surroundings, meditating on pertinent themes and questions in her life, and then expressing these themes, often using her body as a vehicle of expression.
There is no photographer, director, or assistant. Just the body, the camera and the landscape.
The experience and resulting work is shaped by the physical landscape as much as her internal journey and thoughts, as she adapts to the elements and environmental factors.
This interplay runs throughout her work and speaks to the overarching themes of humans relationship to the natural world - how far we have come from our primal state, and how we continue to evolve and further alienate ourselves from our own natural habitat, through progress and innovation in our contemporary consumerist society.
